Empowering the Quit: Practical Strategies for a Successful Smoking Cessation Consultation
Since the year 2000, cigarettes have caused over 1 million preventable deaths among Canadians. As front-line providers, pharmacy professionals can have a significant impact in reducing tobacco use in their patients. Eight in 10 people who use cigarettes already want to reduce or quit, and this course will give you the knowledge to help them do so effectively.

Description
Description:
Did you know tobacco is the #1 cause of preventable disease and death among Canadians? Every day, 125 Canadians die of smoking-related illnesses, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Today, we have excellent evidence-based solutions for tobacco use, and often it’s just a matter of getting patients access to them. Â
That’s where you come in. Pharmacotherapy has been shown to consistently double or triple the rate of smoking cessation. Taking only 30 seconds to offer assistance with smoking cessation could change your patient’s life. In fact, studies show that:
96 per cent of people will not be able to quit long-term through willpower aloneÂ
With tobacco cessation, withdrawal syndrome can last up to four weeksÂ
Short counselling advice can increase the likelihood of smoking cessation and abstinence rates by 40 per cent
In this course, you will learn a highly effective strategy for addressing tobacco use in your patients. You’ll discover how to approach the conversation, reduce stigma and shame for the patient, and understand the neurobiological challenges to quitting. Â
You’ll receive a detailed overview of the Ontario Smoking Cessation program, the 5 A’s framework, motivational interviewing techniques, and reimbursement info for time spent counselling patients. You’ll also learn different strategies for tailoring treatment plans to the individual patient, different products and combination therapies, and get valuable follow-up insights and counselling tips.
