Description:

This course covers the minor ailments that will be included in the list of minor ailments that pharmacists can prescribe for in Ontario as of October 1, 2023. Created in partnership with The University of Waterloo (UW), this course expands on the content of the original authorization and equips pharmacists with the necessary knowledge and skills to confidently prescribe and assess for six additional minor ailments. Using a similar methodology as the first course, this course provides a comprehensive understanding of the six minor ailments, processes for assessing patients and the structure pharmacists should implement when providing minor ailment services.

The six minor ailments include: 

  • Acne (mild)
  • Aphthous Ulcers (canker sores)
  • Diaper dermatitis
  • Vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection)
  • Pinworms and threadworms
  • Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy

 

Note: This course does not focus on the legal requirements for pharmacists prescribing for minor ailments in each jurisdiction. Please refer to the regulatory authority in your jurisdiction for more information.  

Learning Objectives:

For each minor ailment condition, participants should be able to*: 

  • Describe the pathophysiology 
  • Identify possible causes and risk factors 
  • Apply the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) necessary for a patient consultation

Who Should Take This Course:

The course is primarily developed to train pharmacists in prescribing for minor ailments. However, this course is open for pharmacy students and technicians as well as nurse practitioners and other clinicians who would like to gain and/or refine their knowledge on how to deliver a robust, high quality minor ailments service.
