Allan H. Malek
Executive Vice-President and Chief Pharmacy Officer
Ontario Pharmacists Assocaition
As a pharmacist working in advocacy and government relations, there is no typical work day. Every day is dynamic and requires a tremendous amount of flexibility and multi-tasking. I work regularly with external stakeholders such as government, regulators, brand and generic pharma, patient groups, private payors, other provincial and national associations, and other healthcare profession associations. As a pharmacist representing the voice of the pharmacy profession, I see myself as a provider of indirect patient care. I have a keen interest in advocating for our priorities such as medicinal cannabis, expanding programs in smoking cessation, vaccination, common ailments, point-of-care testing and pharmacy operations to name just a few. I am passionate about pharmacy, and that makes me extremely stubborn. Despite the harsh realities of government advocacy and the politics involved, I remain an eternal optimist. I see it as my personal mission to advocate as to where the pharmacy profession can and should go. Pharmacists are patients and consumers of healthcare, too. We use the healthcare system like all other Ontarians, and so we owe it to ourselves to make our system the very best it can be.
