Alysena® 28 recall expanded to include additional lot numbers

In the OPA Bulletin sent to members on April 9, OPA provided information and recommended actions around a Health Canada recall of Alysena® 28, DIN 02387883, distributed by Apotex. The recall affected LOT NUMBER LF01899A at that time.

Strategies and operational tips to assist with generic price reductions effective April 1
|
If the result is positive, it means you have excess inventory and you will want to apply the excess inventory to prescriptions for patients who are due for their refills between April 8 and April 30, 2013. Once again, these prescriptions MUST be processed on or before 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2013. You may want to contact neighbouring pharmacies to see if they are in need of inventory prior to the April 1 transition. Read more

Value of expanded authority release

Toronto, ON (March 6, 2013) – Just in time for Pharmacist Awareness Week, a new study from the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association (OPA) has shown that Ontario could realize health system savings of at least $143 million over the next five years by fully implementing and funding pharmacists’ authority in five key practice areas - counselling and prescribing for smoking cessation, administering flu vaccinations, adapting patients’ drug therapy, renewing prescriptions for stable chronic conditions, and prescribing for minor ailments. Letter to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and Executive Officer, Ontario Public Drug Programs

On February 7, OPA reached out to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and the Executive Officer, Ontario Public Drug Programs to formally request that OPA and the Ontario government engage in discussions around the public drug program and the role pharmacists can and should play in system reform. Like all of you, we are concerned about the sustainability of the public drug program (under pressure as the number of patients using the system increases due to demographic shifts, and as more new and expensive drugs come on the market), and recognize that the government is under fiscal pressure to keep costs from rising too fast.

Phase 1 of the Pharmaceutical Opinion Program, implemented April 1, 2011, is best categorized as dispensing or transactional services that positively impact patient care and represent services pharmacists have been routinely providing to patients but without compensation. Most notable are the pharmaceutical opinion as well as services that verify adherence, tolerance and response to medication therapy. Read more
