The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) has a vision to advance and integrate health care in order to make it more accessible to Ontarians and at the same time improve its efficiency. Since health care is information based, better utilization of information has the potential to make the system more integrated, more available, and at the same time enhance patient safety and accountability. With this in mind, MOHLTC has designed an e-Health strategy to drive the transformation of the health care system through the use of information and information technology (I&IT).
What is e-Health?
According to MOHLTC, “e-Health is about achieving better health outcomes by transforming health systems and business practices through investment in and more comprehensive use of information and information technology”.
There are five “R”s in the vision of e-Health as it is designed to deliver the Right information abou the Right individual to the Right person at the Right place at the Right time to enhance health outcomes and improve system efficiency.
OPA has been collaborating with stakeholders and actively involved in the various e-Health projects. It will continue to lead in the e-Health environment to ensure that initiatives/projects to be implemented are not only to the best interest of the Ontario pharmacists, but will also create a health system that will improve both safety and outcomes of our clients.
