The Pain and Palliative Care Program focuses on management of chronic pain and palliative care for patients. Receiving a variety of teaching strategies over 2 and 1/2 days, pharmacists are provided with current, evidence-based information from experts in the field and then have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in case study sessions. This is a CCCEP-approved program that covers the following topics:
- Chronic Non-cancer Pain: overview, definition, pathophysiology
- Cancer Pain: causes, classification
- Issues: ethics, physiological, pharmacological, behavioural
- Treatment and Management: pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic, opioids, methadone for pain
- Special Considerations: pediatric, elderly
- Palliative Care: overview, principles and practice, issues, palliative care at home
- End of Life Issues: patient counselling, grief and bereavement support, communication with families and care providers.
